{"id":4256,"date":"2017-07-18T09:03:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T09:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.euroespa.com\/?p=4256"},"modified":"2025-03-10T18:23:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T17:23:04","slug":"femoral-nerve-block-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euroespa.com\/femoral-nerve-block-article\/","title":{"rendered":"Femoral Nerve Block Article"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By\u00a0Dr Jacinth Tan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Fast, safe and effective procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In patients undergoing surgery: Reduces the amount of general anaesthetic and opioid analgesics needed intraoperatively<sup>1<\/sup>, reduces post-operative pain and analgesic consumption<sup>1, 2<\/sup>, and may even reduce the length of hospital stay<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In patients not undergoing surgery: Reduces the pain from hip fractures, provides longer duration of analgesia, reduces the analgesic doses needed and reduces the number of nursing interventions<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span>Indications:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Surgical procedures to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Hip joint.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Femur (e.g. femoral fractures)<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Knee (e.g. knee arthroscopies, ACL reconstructions, patella ligament realignment)<sup>4<\/sup>:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>For anterior knee procedures: A&nbsp;femoral nerve block alone may suffice<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>For coverage of the medial aspect of the knee: Obturator nerve block should be added<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>For coverage of the lateral aspect of the knee: Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block should be added<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>For coverage of the posterior aspect of the knee: Sciatic nerve block should be added<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Anterior thigh (e.g. skin graft from the anterior aspect of the thigh)<sup>\u00a05<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Medial aspect of the leg (by blocking the saphenous nerve\u2014a terminal cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In combination with a&nbsp;popliteal block, analgesia can be provided for any procedure on the lower leg and foot<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In combination with a&nbsp;high sciatic block and an obturator nerve block, analgesia can be provided for the entire lower extremity<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span>Contraindications:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Local infection at the proposed needle insertion point.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Situations where dense sensory block may mask the onset of lower extremity compartment syndrome (especially if combined with a&nbsp;sciatic block). E.g. Fresh fractures of the tibia\/ fibula, or extensive and traumatic elective orthopaedic procedures to the tibia and fibula.
